Application forms can be found at University’s admissions web page under sports scholarships/golf. Completed application forms must be emailed to sportsscholarship@nuim.ie

 

The closing date for receipt of applications is 1st of April 2014. Applications received after this date will not be considered.

 

Following review, the top applicants will be invited to attend the University in May for an interview with the scholarship management team. Candidates who are successful in achieving a scholarship will be notified in writing by June.

Below is some additional information on the scholarships offered and academic criteria required for achieving a Paddy Harrington golf scholarship.

 

  • A candidate should hold a current handicap of scratch or better for men and 3 or better for women but handicap is NOT the sole determining factor when awarding a scholarship
  • Have obtained International , National and or provincial representation honours & experience in home country
  • Management assess applicants, golfing achievements in the last two years and short and long term golfing objectives
  • Scholarship are reserved for those players who have the potential to reach a top amateur or professional level of performance

All applicants have to apply to NUI Maynooth through the Central Applications Office (CAO) www.cao.ie

Applicants have to achieve a minimum of 300points in their leaving certificate or equivalent ‘A levels’in order to matriculate into the University. Golf scholarship recipients must be enrolled in a full time undergraduate or post-graduate degree course. If an applicant is successful in receiving a sports scholarship at NUI Maynooth they may be offered an extra 60points concession in their leaving certificate in order to help them reach sufficient points for a degree course.

At NUI Maynooth we encourage all our golf scholars to pursue a degree courses which allow some degree of flexibility so that they can fully engage with the golf scholarship programme.
For example, a student pursuing a science or engineering degree course is likely to have at least 25-30 hours of lectures a week, whereas a student studying arts or business may only have between 12-16 hours a week.

Access to full GUI Academy Practise Facility

10 bay driving range, large putting green, short game area including two large greens for chipping and bunker play, Titleist custom fitting centre and two reserved grass hitting areas for players who are Team Ireland grant holders, Irish squad members and Paddy Harrington golf scholarship and development players.

Availability: Scholarship and development panel players have full use the facility all day Monday to Saturday.

Access to two championship golf courses at Carton House Golf Club

Two 18 hole championship golf courses in Montgomerie & O´Meara. Montgomerie golf course was host to the 2005, 2006 & 2013 Irish Open.

Membership: Scholarship scheme players have access to these golf courses during the academic year expect at weekends. Players have limited access during the summer months and can play any time other than during member’s competitions or large society outings.

Practice Facilities: The club’s facilities are only used on match days for team warm up.

Access to The Royal Dublin Golf Club Championship links course

18hole championship golf club host to Irish Amateur Open and previous Irish Opens.

Membership: Ten yearly student memberships are available. Players have full access to the course (excluding Saturdays) but can play in weekly Wednesday singles competitions.

Access to this championship links course and its practise facilities have greatly benefitted the golf programme in 2012-13.

Priority on -campus accommodation

Golf scholars are awarded priority for on-campus accommodation in their 1st year of study and continuation on – campus is reviewed each term. Our golf scholars live in the river apartments where each bedroom has an en-suite bathroom. A typical apartment has five bedrooms each with its own en-suite bathroom with a common living area, large kitchen, dining and lounge area. Residents with personal computers also have the opportunity of internet access in their own room.

Golf Coaching & technical development

Platinum & Gold scholars receive group coaching every 3-4 weeks and can avail of individually coaching at our training base at the GUI National Academy. Silver & Bronze receive coaching every 4-6weeks and have limited access to individual coaching.

GRIP - Effective practice improvement programme

GRIP incorporates game-like practice drills with pressure, practicing mental routines, shot measurement & online performance tracking. All scholarship scheme players are given GRIP packages and access to the our personal grip portal page which outlines our practise programme and leader board. Sessions take place weekly at the GUI academy.

Warm weather training at Oceanico Golf Resorts, Algarve, Portugal.

Platinum & Gold Scholars are put through an intense warm weather training week at Oceanico Golf Resort in the Algarve, Portugal at the end of January. Our training base is at the Amendoeira Golf Academy which boasts some of the best facilities in Europe and players get the opportunity to play some of Oceanico finest courses located in Vilamoura. The goal of the training week is to speed up players improvement plans and to allow scholars quality practise time and competitive golf during the winter months.

Golf specific training

Scholarship players get between 3-5hours golf specific training per week.

Platinum, Golf & Silver scholars are put through a weekly golf circuit training class and are given screening and personal training programmes. Platinum & Gold get to access to one-on -one personal training and a weekly yoga for golf training both of which run throughout the academic year.

Mental fitness Coaching & Performance Analysis

Platinum & Gold scholars get access to one-on-one coaching sessions with our mental fitness coach once a month. Our mental coach conducts performance analysis with players so as to identity areas for improvement. Our coach conducts a number of motivational seminars’ prior to major events.

Performance Nutrition and Lifestyle Management

Platinum & Gold scholars get access to our expert performance nutritionist who designs individual diet plans for players based on their training regimes. Our coach also educates players on lifestyle management and conducts regular talks on nutrition for golf.

Financial Support

Platinum & Gold Scholars receive up to €1,000 each semester. Individual bursaries may be used for educational purposes, competition entry fees and expenses. Additional payments may be made based on national / international performance subject to this arrangement being in keeping with R&A rules on amateurism.

R&A Individual Bursary Awards Available

Golf scholars who hold a handicap of +1 or better or who currently part of their national golf squad are entitled to a bursary payment from the R&A.
